Brake Discs
How do brakes stop a car?
A disc brake system consists of a brake disc, a brake calliper and brake pads. When the brake pedal is applied, pressurised hydraulic fluid squeezes the brake pad friction material against the surface of the rotating brake disc. The result of this contact produces friction which enables the vehicle to slow down or stop.
If your car shudders when you apply the brakes, it’s often a sign that you need to get your brake discs replaced.
Questions and Answers
How do disc brakes work on a car?
When the brakes are applied, brake fluid forces both pistons into each brake pad, which press against each side of the rotor, to stop the wheel and vehicle. The rotor is an iron disc connected to the tyre's hub. Rotors work hand-in-hand with brake pads to stop your vehicle.
How do I know if my brake discs are worn?
If you hear grinding noises when you brake, it could mean your brake pads or discs need replacing.
How long do brake discs last?
The brake rotors on a car usually last anywhere between 50,000 and 70,000 miles. Consult your car’s owner manual for advised inspection schedule.
